Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by memory loss, which tends to worsen over time. However, a 2022 review study suggests that musical memory remains mostly preserved in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Playing music for someone with this condition, especially familiar music, may generate an emotional response, possibly improving mood and cognition.
Studies also suggest that music may help with reducing agitation, depression and anxiety in people with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Here are some ways you can use music to help a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease:
- Choose music they will enjoy, like songs from their childhood or calming tunes. If possible, let them pick the music.
- Avoid music that could trigger unpleasant memories or music that is too loud. Both of these can cause distress and overstimulation.
- Encourage some movement! Anything from singing and dancing to something as simple as tapping to the rhythm can help engage them.
- Try to limit background noise. This may also overwhelm and distress them.
