At Baycrest, our Memory Link program is a beacon of hope for individuals navigating life with newfound memory challenges due to brain injuries or cognitive impairment due to other health conditions. We recently got a chance to connect with Doron Daniels, a previous Memory Link patient and Dr. Angela Troyer, Program Director of Neuropsychology and Cognitive Health to learn about the profound impact of this type of programming has had for people like Doron who are learning to reclaim their independence and live at home again after a health setback. Below you can learn about Doron’s journey with Baycrest which began over two decades ago after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor.

Tell us about what brought you to the Memory Link program at Baycrest:

“I had gotten out of the hospital after a major surgery. And after you’re let go from the hospital, you just walk out the doors and the doctors think everything’s fine because you’re physically well. Meanwhile, I had difficulty even remembering what I had for breakfast at 11 a.m..

From there it accumulated into all kinds of complexities. My doctor had heard about the Memory Link program at Baycrest and connected me with the program. Memory Link didn’t just provide me with tools; it gave me a community,” Doron said, reflecting on the value of connecting with others who shared similar struggles. His experience didn’t stop at receiving help—he also gave back, mentoring younger individuals facing similar challenges.

Dr. Angela Troyer on Memory Links Process:

“At Memory Link, our program focuses on two main components. First, we work with clients to identify their personal goals and we tailor the training to help them achieve those specific goals. Second, we offer a support group where participants can connect with others facing similar challenges. Severe memory changes often impact many aspects of life, and it’s rare to meet others who truly understand the experience. These groups provide not only practical strategies but also a sense of community and mutual support. Together, these elements form the foundation of our program: cognitive rehabilitation and emotional support.”

We provide a range of services designed to help individuals understand and manage challenges with their memory and thinking abilities. Our goal is to empower clients to navigate these difficulties and improve their quality of life. One of our key initiatives focuses on supporting individuals with memory challenges through personalized strategies and training. By identifying specific, meaningful goals, we work closely with each individual to create a tailored plan that addresses their unique needs, helping them remember what matters most and enhancing their independence and confidence.”

Doron Daniels on Memory Links Process:

“MemoryLink not only gave me the skills I needed but also connected me with others facing similar challenges, which was incredibly helpful. When I started 20 years ago, I was trained on the basics using a Palm Pilot. At first, I didn’t realize how much it could help, but I quickly learned to set reminders for everyday tasks like eating breakfast, walking the dog, and buying birthday gifts. These small steps helped me organize my life and eventually tackle bigger projects—like renovating a house.”

Mentorship and Paying It Forward

Doron’s contributions to Baycrest extend beyond his personal rehabilitation success. “Through Baycrest, I also had the opportunity to mentor several younger individuals between 18 and 25 years old. “Mentoring has been incredibly rewarding for me. I’ve had the opportunity to support younger individuals who faced brain injuries and memory challenges, showing them how they can adapt and continue with their lives. It’s empowering to give back, especially knowing how isolating it can feel when dealing with memory issues, particularly at a young age. Through this experience, I’ve realized the importance of supporting others and ‘paying it forward.’ That’s why I’ve chosen to stay involved with Baycrest—by mentoring and donating—because I know firsthand how valuable these resources are for those going through similar challenges.”

Continuing the Journey

Today, Doron Daniels is not only a proud participant in the Memory Link program but also a passionate donor dedicated to ensuring its longevity and impact.

“I chose to support Baycrest because I understand how challenging it is to live with memory issues,” Doron shared. “Memory Link is truly unique in the way it supports both younger and older individuals. It’s a program that deserves to grow and continue making a difference.”

Even after 20 years, the lessons Doron learned through Memory Link remain central to his daily life. “I still rely on what I gained from the program. It has been life-changing,” he said.

Beyond his personal success, Doron has profoundly impacted others by sharing his story, mentoring individuals on similar journeys, and generously supporting the program. His contributions have played a vital role in ensuring Memory Link’s success, providing the tools and resources needed to inspire and transform lives—one memory at a time.
